Earlier this year, Rick Barrow took part in a memorial cricket match to honour the memory of Rizwan Jameel, a fellow player of Rick’s at Stockport Georgians Cricket Club.
The match raised £1167.33 for a local diabetes group in memory of the player who died suddenly of complications linked to diabetes in January 2021.
Speaking about the event, Rick said, “Rizwan was a keen cricketer and member of Stockport Georgians for over a decade. He lost his life aged just 38 which was far too young. As club sponsors, I was privileged to take part and represent JBGass.”
The Memorial Day featured a mixed game with Stockport Cricket Club followed by a competitive game against Heaton Mersey Cricket Club. The money raised was donated to Stockport Tadpole Group, who support children and families living with diabetes.
A total of £827.00 was raised on the day through a raffle, donations and through a BBQ with all produce kindly donated by club sponsor, J T Griffiths & Co. JBGass donated an additional £340.33 plus marketing materials for the day and subsequent press coverage.
The Diabetes UK Stockport Tadpole group is one of over 350 voluntary groups situated throughout the UK. The group was set up in 1994 with the help of the British Diabetic Association (as it was then). The Group since then has always been self-funding and relies entirely on fundraising activities.
Trevor Bailey, Chairperson of Stockport Georgians Cricket Club, said “Rizwan was universally loved here at Georgians and in the wider cricketing community. He loved the game of cricket and he loved Georgians. He played Cricket the Georgians Way – Play to win, but with a smile on your face.”
As part of the tributes to Rizwan, the pavilion at the club has been renamed in his memory.
